Marvel’s New York Comic Con doubleheader continued late Friday afternoon with their “Secret Invasion” panel, taking place directly after their “Mondo Marvel” panel, and in the same room. The panel started with Jim McCann introducing and playing the final “Kinsey” video blog (part of a viral marketing campaign for Secret Invasion).
Comprising the panel was many holdovers from the “Mondo Marvel” panel - Axel Alonso, Jason Aaron, Tom Brevoort, Greg Pak, Fred Van Lente, Dan Slott, Brian Reed, Christos Gage, and Joe Quesada - along with newcomers Daniel Way, Kevin Grevioux, Andy Lanning, and Marvel editor Bill Rosemann.
Quesada opened the panel by saying he'll have to lead the panel 10 minutes early, and then turning to McCann. Volunteers passed out Skrull masks to the crowd before the panel started, and McCann asked everyone in the crowd to put on their masks for a couple quick photos.
A slide then showed a cover of Secret Invasion #2 showing Hawkeye (in his classic outfit) and his wife, the presumed-deceased (but on the Skrull ship in Secret Invasion #1) Mockingbird.
When introducing the panel, Quesada noted that it was Kevin Greioux's first Marvel Comic panel, and that he had a "tremendous voice." Quesada commented that hearing Grevioux talk is like hearing Mephisto speak.
Secret Invasion: Thor was announced, written by Matt Fraction and drawn by...to be announced.
Peter David's She-Hulk/X-Factor tie-in with Secret Invasion was briefly mentioned, with an accompanying slide shown.
Quesada officially announced the long-talked about Daniel way Deadpool ongoing series, premiering in September and with art by Paco Medina.
The Brian Reed written-Amazing Spider-Man: Secret Invasion was briefly teased with a slide.
With that done, the panel went straight to fan Q&A.
"Any chance of Jim Starlin doing any cosmic books for Marvel?" Quesada:
"Not at the moment, no."
A fan asked a common convention question - if there's too many "events." Quesada said "fans vote with their dollars," and events seem to be what fans currently really want. He continued that he expects that will change at some point, but hasn't yet.
A female fan asked about the Gen Next project, not knowing that it was solicited and scheduled to come out next month - she was pleased.
She continued by expressing concern over the status of Kitty Pryde (after the recent Uncanny X-Men where Kitty was said to be "lost"). McCann said that the last issue will be out in May, and clarify what that means.
The same fan asked another question - whether or not the Iron Man movie will be good. Quesada said he "loved the movie," and has seen it four times. He pointed specifically towards the characterization of Tony Stark and the Stark/Pepper Potts relationship.
A fan with a British accent asked about the Skrull Kill Krew, who got powers from eating Skrull burgers. "How did they taste?" he asked. "Like chicken," Quesada joked.
"Will Namor be making an appearance in Secret Invasion?" "Yes," said Brevoort, typically a man of few words.
Brian Reed was asked about his vision for Secret Invasion: Front Line. The writer said that it's joked around the office that Bendis is writing "Godzilla," and he's writing "Cloverfield." "It's about survival," Reed said.
"Will any comics end as a result of Secret Invasion, specifically one of the three Avengers book?" Brevoort said he thinks there will be three Avengers books for a long time.
Any chance of a What If? Secret Invasion? Brevoort indicated that it seems distinctly possible, probably about a year from now.
A fan asked about the correlation between the cosmic books and Secret Invasion. Rosemann said upcoming issues of both Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy will tie-in to the event. The fan asked about Super Skrull, with Lanning joking "I can definitely confirm that Super Skrull is a Skrull." He continued by saying that the other Skrulls see the character as a "bit of a has-been" and that he has a "very personal story arc" that will play out over the course of Secret Invasion.
This led Slott to remind Rosemann to mention Jazinda, the daughter of Super Skrull, currently appearing in the Peter David-penned She-Hulk.
A father and son, both said to be enjoying Secret Invasion, came up to the mic. The son asked "is it possible the Sentry could be a Skrull?" Quesada said it's possible for "anyone" to be a Skrull, but it's only issue #1, so, essentially, keep reading.
"I like how you're bringing back all the obscure Skrull characters like Lyja and Crusader," said a fan. He then asked if other lesser-known Skrull characters, like Titannus and Ethan Edwards will show up. Brevoort said Slott was asking about Titannus, and that with all the Skrulls showing up, it's possible those two characters might, as well.
A fan asked about Amadeus Cho's involvement in Secret Invasion, with Pak pointing to the "Sacred Invasion" tie-in issues of Incredible Hercules.
Grevioux talked, with the famously powerful voice of his, about New Warriors, discussing an upcoming storyline taking place during Secret Invasion where the "old" and "new" New Warriors take place in a "huge donnybrook" over the old New Warriors thinking the new ones might be Skrulls.
"I think Kevin's voice is like Black Bolt's voice," McCann said after Grevioux finished.
Will the X-Men's involvement in Secret Invasion be contained to Secret Invasion: X-Men? Alonso said that mini-series "is really the place we're going to take it on." He said the X-Men are an army now, post-"Messiah CompleX," and will "kick Skrull ass."
Alonso then gave the mic to Daniel Way to talk about Deadpool, and its involvement with Secret Invasion. Way described SI as "pervasive," and that Deadpool will deal with it in a "bizarre, twisted way."
Does Phoenix - or someone that sure looks like her - coming out of the Skrull ship in Secret Invasion #1 signify a possible return of Jean Grey? "It's possible," said Brevoort. "Keep reading the books."
A fan asked about the Inhumans, specifically the fact that they're missing their king since Black Bolt was revealed to be a Skrull in New Avengers: The Illuminati and the status of the "real" Black Bolt is unknown. Rosemann said it'll be dealt with in Secret Invasion: Inhumans.
A fan asked about Jason Aaron's plan for the Secret Invasion tie-in issues of Black Panther. "Black Panther being who he is, he's got a contingency plan for this," said Aaron, describing the story as a "gritty, hand-to-hand battle" against the Skrulls and the Wakandans. Aaron clarified that he's only on Black Panther for those three issues.
Any chance of a Nick Fury ongoing post-Secret Invasion? McCann said that there are definite plans for the character during Secret Invasion - and perhaps after, if he makes it out of the story alive.
The controversial subject of purported disgruntled Marvel employee "Marvel_B0y" was breached - "Was that you guys playing a joke on us," a fan asked. "No, it wasn't," Quesada answered succinctly.
Possibility of a Sentry/Thor face-off? "That would be really cool, wouldn't it?" Quesada said, excitedly, then adding that he doesn't know when it will happen.
A Thor reader asked why the new, female Loki, went to Dr. Doom with his plans instead of being "the traditional Norse trickster" (his words). Quesada said he couldn't speak for JMS and to keep reading the book.
Chance of seeing Ultimate Spider-Woman again? McCann: "You actually are going to see her, but not for a little bit," adding that Brian Michael Bendis brought her up at the most recent creative retreat.
A self-professed lifelong Marvel fan expressed concern with lesser-known characters not getting enough attention. Quesada said they're always trying to bring life back to lesser-known characters - like the upcoming Hellcat mini-series - but that their main focus will always be the best known characters in order to stay afloat, since "comics are very democratic." The fan brought up Namor, and Quesada agreed with her that he'd like to see a Namor ongoing succeed, adding that it's a matter of "finding the right creative team" and pitch.
Quesada then departed the panel, letting McCann take over.
Any plans of bringing back Solo Avengers? Also - have any humans infiltrated the Skrulls? In order, Brevoort said no plans for Solo Avengers, and that he always thought the concept was 'kind of stupid." "In terms of humans infiltrating the Skrulls, keep reading."
The common online conjecture that the reimagined Battlestar Galactica influenced Secret Invasion thematically came up, with Brevoort saying that he can't speak for Brian Michael Bendis, but there's been Skrull storylines taking place for over 40 years now. Reed then added that it's "impossible" to get Bendis to watch sci-fi shows, and that he tried to get Bendis to watch "BSG" for two years before he finally did.
With that, that panel wrapped, to clear the room for the "DC Nation" panel taking place in the same space immediately afterwards.
