The sky wasn’t the only place there were fireworks this past weekend – the box office saw its share as well, with Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen duking it out for a neck and neck tie. Both films saw estimated weekend grosses of $42.5 million over the holiday weekend.

For Transformers, the weekend take lifts the film’s domestic box office total to $293.5 million – although the weekend results also represent a 61% dropoff from its opening weekend. $4.6 million of Transformers’ take came from IMAX theaters

The third Ice Age film, which opened last Wednesday, has seen a total of $67.5 million, placing it behind the opening weekend of the second Ice Age film in 2006.

And mixing it all in – animation and giant robots weren’t the only things at the box office this past weekend. Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, which also opened last Wednesday, brought in $41 million.

As for competition this weekend, the geek-friendly film version of I Love You, Beth Cooper opens on Friday. The robot killer? That will come July 15th, with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
