Yesterday
we debuted the second DC teaser image for Countdown, this one,
focused on the villains.
Speculation kicked off in high gear, and hasn't really slowed
down yet. Now, to throw a little more gasoline on the fire, DC Comics
has provided us with a high-resolution version of the teaser image,
allowing viewers to perhaps catch more subtle details, or at least
confirm some suspicions.
We've also
got a few comments from DCU Executive Editor Dan DiDio about it
as well…
Newsarama:
Just to start off…we walked through all the teasers of the original
teaser image on Friday,
and now we've got the new one - you want to start walking through
the images and what they mean on this one?
Dan DiDio:
[laughs] Not a chance. Heck - there are some people and things on
there that I don't even know why they're there. But now that
they're there, I guess we have to use them into the stories.
NRAMA:
And this is Ethan Van Sciver this time, basically with hints at
a bunch of things that are coming up…
DD:
All the things hinted at in this image will get us to the end of
Countdown.
NRAMA:
Let's take two of the bigger things here - that's Darkseid's head
there, replacing the Statue of Liberty's from the original…
DD:
Or is it? Os maybe did the veneer of the Statue of Liberty just
fall off, and Darkseid's been there all along? [laughs] Yes - that's
it - the reality of the story is that Darkseid was the model for
the Statue of Liberty.
NRAMA:
I see you're going to be very helpful here…
DD:
That's the biggest secret of the DC Universe. [laughs]
NRAMA:
Like the first one, you've got lots of interesting little things
here and there throughout the image. Was the approach on this one
the same as the first after you saw how much fun people had with
the first one?
DD:
I wanted to create a piece of art that didn't just promote one particular
book, but rather the entire line and the stories that are going
to be key and significant throughout the line itself. Each one of
the quadrants on that image identify key beats in stories that are
taking place throughout the DCU. They're not all interconnected,
but they are interrelated. They're all dealing with some similar
subject matters, and that's what links them together.
NRAMA:
One last big thing on that image - the sky. Red and…reminiscent
of how things tend to look at the time of Crisis in the DCU…
DD:
The city's in turmoil, and whatever's affecting the city is affecting
the sky as well. Don't expect any on-time flights on that that day.
But yeah -
there's a lot of fun stuff in there, and each one of these images
was a lot of fun putting together, and we can go through this one
like we did with the first in about six months, and see how close
people were on their guesses.
In the meantime, we've got your high-resolution looks at the teaser
image, in three ways - the whole thing (sillybig - 3000 pixels wide):
And also as
right and left pieces:
Finally - as we did with
the first teaser image, we're looking for a few good questions.
DiDio has agreed to answer a handful…more than ten, less than twenty,
about the new image, so if you've got a good one about the image
- and we mean a good one that wedges him into a corner that
he can't get out of without coughing up some information, post it
in the thread. We'll gather up the best of the best later in the
week, and have the answers from Dan back early next week.
