Art alert: Dawnstar's second solo comics cover in 30 years! See George
Pérez's art for
Legion of 3 Worlds #5, now due 22 July 2009, on page 4!

Updated for NewNewRama: Dawnstar links added below, larger mini-gallery images
__________________________________________________________________________________________

Welcome, all admirers of — or anyone interested in — the Legion's feather-winged beauty!

I'll start off this new edition of the thread with a full-size view of an exquisite rendition of Dawnstar by her visual creator, Mike Grell, from the last page of the old edition ...

Image

For your pleasure and reference, here is a mini-gallery of how Dawnstar has appeared over the years, as rendered by published DC artists: Keith Giffen, Steve Lightle, Greg LaRocque, Ed Benes, and (most recently) two by Gary Frank ... click each of them for a larger version!

And finally, as the re-instigator of this thread, I'll be so bold as to suggest a few related links ...
~ Thoughts and exultations about Dawnstar's return in 2007 (includes pro and fan art!)
~ Dawnstar and Mon-el fanfic story with six illustrations by fan artists
~ Dawnstar fan-art gallery with many works from the 'Rama threads
~ Dawnstar tribute site long in the works, still hoping to expand soon in 2009

I've always loved the character, but I especially appreciated her boots.  These were the same footwear of choice by all the "bad" girls in by school.

It's probably better ...

Postby Greybird » Wed Jun 04, 2008 11:43 pm

... that an actual appreciator start an appreciation thread! {g}

Not that such precedence matters much here, as it appears that the thread starter can't lock the thread in this software. Nor can I delete the opening post. All of which is fine with me, though I know others disagree.

(I believe that once others have committed to the discussion, it's not being fair to them to stop or delete a thread because one doesn't like how it's going. Only for gross abuse, and that's what the admins / mods are supposedly present to handle.)

Hey Greybird, nice to see you again.

So, no one can close a thread except for mods?

Since the "Lightning Saga" / Action Comics stories? If so, that's especially great! Gary Frank's look is drawing people in.

{grin} My high school didn't have such a sense of style. (It was the '70s, what would you expect?) I'm curious about your reaction to the diminished fringe on Frank's design for her boots.

Good to see you here too. ... It doesn't appear that any command exists to close a thread. That was a feature of vBulletin. Mods, o'course, can do as they wish. I think more of them are going to be needed, as the Old Boards never had enough, and this is newly explored territory.

Unfortunately she doesn't look as bad.  Wink  I love Frank's art anyway.  Boots be damned.

I am fairly new to Legion lore, but I have always been intrigued by the character.

Reflection of affection

Dawnstar becomes the "face" of her long-time lover, through a striking metaphor created by Brian Ahern ...

Thanks.

I agree. Three moderators are not enough for all the 'Rama drama.

Dawny and Lar come together

A what-might-have-been, depicted by Dean Lee ...

For how Dawnstar and Mon-el came to this, ah, intersection of their lives, you're invited to read "Solace in a Stellar Night," with this and five other illustrations (all linked in larger sizes) by fan artists.

Reboot Dawny

Postby Greybird » Mon Jun 09, 2008 9:31 pm

... Or as she should have been, if Jeff Moy had been given a chance to depict her. (Colors by Loser Lad.)

I asked Jeff at the San Diego Comic-Con, a few years back, why he didn't do more with winged folk. He said that he never felt that wings were one of his strong points. Well, I'd have to disagree!

New look, plunging into battle

Postby Greybird » Fri Jun 13, 2008 11:11 pm

Jean Sinclair runs, or flies, with Gary Frank's redesign of Dawnstar's look.

I've had to warm to this look for her, even with my having liked it from its first appearance in Frank's published sketches. I was dubious about how well it would show her off when in starfaring motion and potential combat.

I'm coming to think, from portrayals like this, that the new look may serve Dawnstar better, in those respects, than any other she's had, including Mike Grell's original take on her. Long fringe and wrapped braids were and are gorgeous, but they wouldn't meet her needs in a fight.
