Yesterday, we broke the news about Marvel’s new ongoing series starring Wolverine, Wolverine: Weapon X by Jason Aaron and Ron Garney. Today, we debut the cover to the April shipping first issue by Garney.

As Aaron explained, the new series will delve into Wolverine’s history and be complimentary to Wolverine: Origins, and will also look at the legacy of Weapon X, the secret program that “created” Wolverine.

Aaron told us yesterday: “Basically, I'm approaching this like Garth Ennis did the Punisher MAX series. Obviously, this won't be a MAX book in terms of content, but we will see arcs that are stand-alone and feature lots of new characters and new villains. We'll really be working to establish our own continuity, instead of mining Logan's past. Daniel Way is already doing a great job of dealing with the ins and outs of Logan's history over in Wolverine: Origins, so I want to focus on telling new stories for people who maybe aren’t as familiar with Wolverine continuity. We’ll still be dealing with his past at times, just like how the first arc involves the legacy of Weapon X, but in a way that’s still easily accessible.”

The series will be Marvel’s fourth ongoing Wolverine series after Wolverine, Wolverine: Origins and Wolverine: First Class. As many fans (and Aaron) have noted, the new series will debut shortly before X-Men Origins: Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman, and take a different tone than the other series that are a little more entrenched in continuity, much like Marvel did earlier this year with the debut of Invincible Iron Man, which began its run in May, coinciding with the release of Iron Man in theaters.
