According to character creator and series writer Tom DeFalco, Spider-Girl's long run is finally coming to an end in early 2009. At Comic Boards.com, under the subject heading "All Good Things" DeFalco wrote:
...come to an end and that includes AMAZING SPIDER-GIRL.
I was informed earlier this week that our last issue will be AMAZING SPIDER-GIRL #30.
On the good news front, there is talk that Spider-Girl will become a regular 16-paged feature in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY. (I've been told conflicting things about MR & MRS so I don't know if that feature will continue.)
To those who predicted that SPIDER-GIRL would never last, you were right. (You were off by a little over 11 years, but you were right.)
As a character, Spider-Girl debuted in 1998's What If? #105, which featured the next generation of Marvel heroes, that is heroes who were children of or related to the current crop of Marvel Heroes. Spider-Girl was May "Mayday" Parker, the daughter of Mary Jane Parker.
The concept as a whole caught on, spawning the "MC2" imprint, which was the initial home to Spider-Girl as well as A-Next (the children of and new Avengers) as well as J2, the son of Cain Marko, the Juggernaut.
While the other two titles quickly folded, Spider-Girl continued thanks to strong numbers and a strong fanbase. Numbers did drop to precipitous levels, sparking a number of cancellation scares and rumors. Spider-Girl was finally canceled with issue #100, and relaunched as The Amazing Spider-Girl in October of 2006.
Marvel did not immediately return a request for a confirmation of DeFalco's news.
Update: Marvel has confirmed the cancellation, but like DeFalco, said that there are still more stories to be told with the character.
