FIRST LOOK: More Philip Tan 'GL: Agent Orange' Designs

Earlier Friday we showed you a two-page spread from the upcoming Green Lantern #40 from the series new artist Philip Tan and over the last few weeks we're shown you a series of character designs fro his first story arc "Agent Orange", which introduces the Orange Lanterns in the GL mythos.

Today we take a look at 3 more character designs, but not Orange Lanterns. These 3 are from two other "Corps" that play a role in the story.

So without further ado, we give you Philip Tan...

Newsarama: Phil, these new designs look like you used a different medium. How did you draw these?

Philip Tan: They are all pen and ink, just loosely done for the speed and spontaneity during the designing process. It's not as finished as a fully penciled artwork like I usually do, but I prefer doing it like this when I try to design or redesign stuff.

NRAMA: But these aren't Orange Lanterns, are they? Did you do redesigns on some other Lanterns? How many different corps are you dealing with in this story?

PT: Well, there are a few corps involved with the "Agent Orange" arc, but mainly the Green and the Orange. One of these guys is a Sinestro Corps member while the other two are redesigns of existing Green Lanterns, the robot being Stel. I think that's a giveaway as there aren't a lot of popular robotic lanterns.

NRAMA: Let's talk about this first guy. What can you tell us about this creepy looking creature? Are those skulls on his arms?

PT: He's the Sinestro Corps member, but it's probably better if I don't say anything about him. You'll have to read about him later.

NRAMA: Then what can you tell us about how you drew these Green Lanterns in the second and third image?

PT: The robot is Stel, being rebuilt and taking on a mood/look of his early incarnation. Geoff really wanted me to go back and check out the ones from way back, and surprisingly I found them waaay more detailed than the later versions. So we made sure that we retain that feel of Stel while updating his "robotic and mechanical" designs. I love Stel. But maybe not when I am on deadline! The other one is another Green Lantern Corps member being redesigned. I wonder if people can tell who it is? It's quite a change from his older look.

NRAMA: I'm sure there will be some guesses following this interview. Then as a last question, Phil, as your first issue comes out next week, what's the overall experience been like as you've designed and redesigned and drawn these issues for Green Lantern?

PT: Designing the Orange Lanterns has taken a lot of time, but it's been fun. I had a blast designing them. I think I only redesigned one or two of the Green Lanterns, but coming up with all the stuff for the Vega System, the world they're in and the characters – I had a blast. Geoff gave me some freedom when it came to character designs, and I could almost come up with things without restriction. And it was really fun to have the kind of freedom but still work to achieve the goals Geoff wanted for the characters. It's really exciting to have the first issue coming out now. Everyone's working hard on it, and I can't wait for next week.
