Ever wonder what comic artists do when they’re not creating comics?
David Finch has an answer for you – he participates in art shows like this Saturday’s “Gag Me With a Toon 2: Harder, Faster, Radder,” a show featuring various...interpretations of ‘80s cartoon characters and trends. The show is at Meltdown Comics, 7522 Sunset Blvd, in LA. Call 323-851-7223 for directions, or visit www.meltcomics.com for more.
As for his painting, Finch tracked the creative process of the work, starting with the pencils, for which he wrote:
“I'm going to be showing a new painting at Meltdown in LA. The show is called “Gag Me With a Toon 2,” and it's got an unbelievable lineup of artists involved. Here's a list:
“Steven Daily, Nathan Cabrera, Lola, Tara Mc Phereson, Tomi Monstre, Jon Schnep, Roman Dirge, Jeff McMillian, Gear Box, Mike Kelley, Dan May, Joe Han, Bob Dob, Erik Alos, Han Cholo, Gill, Alex Pardee, Wayshack, El Maz, and the one and only, legendary Joe Benitez. (just updated. Chris Ryniak had to cancel due to his schedule, and I forgot to add Steven Daily who is not only showing, but curating)
“I'm working on a Strawberry Shortcake on My Little Pony, all done Frazetta style. It's going to be a ridiculous looking painting, so I'm having a blast with it. I've put up an image of what I managed to get drawn while watching tv last night. I'll put up progress as I go along. The drawing still needs some skulls, spears, maybe some heads on sticks....we'll see. I want it to be very dark and angry. Too much fun for words. Also, the final painting will be much larger on canvas, so I'll be able to give the picture a lot more room to breathe than what I've got on paper here.
“The show is May 2, and it opens at 7pm. I really hope that some of you can make it to the show. It's going to be a lot of fun with good people, and I'm going to bring some copies of my new sketchbook that I'll give out to the first few people who say they came because they read about the show in my blog.”
He later updated with a look at the progress as he painted the final picture here.
