Frank Springer Passes Away

Newsday reports that comic book artist Frank Springer died last Thursday, April 2nd at his home in Maine, of prostate cancer. Springer was 79.

Along with his comic book work on titles such as Batman, Detective Comics, Secret Six, Captain America, The Avengers, Captain Marvel, Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD, and Dazzler, Springer also drew many comic strips including Terry and the Pirates and Rex Morgan M.D.

Despite his volume of work, Springer always considered the adult-themed The Adventures of Phoebe Zeit-Geist for Evergreen Review.

Springer was born on December 6, 1929 in Jamaca Queens, and received a bachelor’s in Fine Arts from Syracuse University. Springer served in the army during the Korean War, drawing maps at Fort Dix, N.J.

Springer served as the president of the National Cartoonists Society, and won the Reuben Award three times.

Most recently, Springer worked in comics in the ‘80s, inking The Savage She-Hulk and illustrating titles such as G.I. Joe and The Transformers and Green Arrow and Manhunter at DC Comics.

Springer is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara, five children and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service for Springer is planned for later this spring on Long Island.
