AvX-Marvel Leads Another Strong Industry Sales Gain in April

Eight months into the debut of DC’s New 52, the comic book Top 10 chart is beginning to look more evenly distributed between the Big Two publishers. DC charted six of the 10 bestselling titles, to Marvel’s four, including the “Night of the Owls” lead-in Batman #8 (which has overtaken a Jim Lee-less Justice League as DC’s bestselling title for now), the industry’s second bestselling title in April.
As previously mentioned, Marvel was the sales leader in both Unit (39.07%) and Dollar Sales (34.64%) for April, with DC coming in second in both categories, of course, with 34.06% in Unit and in 30.12% in Dollar sales.
May 2012 should be an interesting month to watch when the first wave of New 52 collections hit the market, along with DC’s “Second Wave” of New 52 titles.
But as has been the case for most of this year, the biggest (and best) news isn’t in the monthly horse race between Marvel and DC. For the third time in four months, overall industry sales showed strong gains.
Comic book unit sales were up a modest 2.47% over March, and despite a tiny .28% decline in graphic novel sales, overall sales are still up 2.25% over March.
Compared to April 2011, however, the numbers are even stronger. Overall sales are way up for both comics and graphic novels, with unit sales up a robust 16.04% over the same four-week period last year.
For the year, 2012 is up 15.12% in comic book unit sales and 9.29% in graphic novel sales, for a combined 14.65% gain over the first four months of 2011.
