Original Astonishing X-Men artist John Cassaday is returning to the series for the variant cover of May's issue #50, which Marvel is hyping as a "momentous occasion." Cassaday launched Astonishing X-Men back in 2004 along with with Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator (and now Avengers live-action film director) Joss Whedon, and the variant cover to #50 approximates the artist's variant to issue #1, with the book's current roster in a similar pose. Astonishing X-Men #50 leads directly to June's Astonishing X-Men #51 and the wedding of two as-yet unspecified characters, largely presumed to be openly gay superhero Northstar and his civilian boyfriend, Kyle. Here's the official release from Marvel: "This May, with fans all over the world wondering who will say “I Do” – Marvel is proud to present your first look at superstar artist, John Cassaday’s jaw-dropping variant to Astonishing X-Men #50! Join us for this momentous occasion as this landmark issue not only celebrates an anniversary, but sets up a major turning point for two characters!
