Popeye has been depicted in a variety of media over the decades — from cartoons to radio to film to video games — but he's returning to his comic roots in April at IDW.
The publisher's new, monthly Popeye series will be written by Roger Langridge, whose acclaimed work includes writing and illustrating Snarked and The Muppet Show Comic Book for BOOM! Studios, and writing Thor: The Mighty Avenger for Marvel. The series will be illustrated by Bruce Ozella.
"Ever since I was a kid, the two cartoonists who have had the biggest influence on me have been Carl Barks and E.C. Segar, so getting a chance to write Popeye is quite a thrill," Langridge said in IDW's press release.
Popeye debuted as a comic strip character created by Elzie Crisler Segar in 1929, and the new series is said to be influenced most by the early version of the property. Plans for a Popeye series from IDW were first announced last July at Comic-Con International: San Diego.
April's Popeye #1 will feature a cover by Ozella and a variant illustrated by noted cartoonist Jules Feiffer, seen here.
