AVENGERS VS. X-MEN Covers Revealed
Update, 1/19: Here's a look at the first two variant covers for Avengers vs. X-Men, by two artists quickly rising in stature at Marvel. (Click through the "related images" gallery to check them out.)Scarlet Spider artist Ryan Stegman drew the variant for issue #1, focusing on team leaders Cyclops and Captain America. Current Wolverine and the X-Men artist Ryan Stegman illustrated the #2 variant, featuring, among other match-ups, the Juggernaut-ified Colossus against the Red Hulk. Update, 1/18: And here's Jim Cheung's cover for Avengers vs. X-Men #2, also out in April. Marvel's official accompanying text follows: "This April, prepare for the biggest super hero war in comics history as Marvel is pleased to present your first look at the jaw-dropping cover to Avengers Vs. X-Men #2 by superstar artist Jim Cheung! From the powerhouse creative team of Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Matt Fraction, Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brubaker, John Romita Jr., Adam Kubert and Olivier Copiel comes a groundbreaking event pitting Earth’s Mightiest against the X-Men with the entire Marvel Universe at stake. With the opening salvo fired, the time for talking is over and in Avengers Vs. X-Men #2, allegiances are decided upon as quickly as they are broken. What side does Wolverine choose and what decision will Hope make that may turn the tide of the war… just as it begins?" As you can see, it looks like "whose side is Wolverine on?" will be a major story point at least early on, which explains the contradictory images released thus far; some of which show him with the Avengers, and some of which depict him fighting against them. Original story, 1/16: Continuing the Avengers vs. X-Men promotional blitz, Marvel revealed the cover for Avengers vs. X-Men #1 on Monday, illustrated by Jim Cheung. As pointed out by Graeme McMillan on Blog@Newsarama, the cover is firmly in the "face-off" tradition of images like the original Justice League vs. Avengers piece or X-Men #100. Also of note is that Wolverine and Beast are depicted on the side of the Avengers, while Storm — another character with dual membership — is with the X-Men. Interior art for the issue, scheduled for April 3, is by John Romita Jr. Last week, Marvel rolled out 12 Avengers vs. X-Men teasers highlighting specific, potential match-ups within the series. Avengers vs. X-Men is scheduled for 12 parts, and is written by Marvel "architects" Jason Aaron, Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction and Jonathan Hickman; with art by Romita, Adam Kubert and Olivier Coipel.
