Liu & Perkins Take on ASTONISHING X-MEN

Update, 3:40 p.m. eastern: Writer Marjorie Liu and artist Mike Perkins are the new Astonishing X-Men creative team as of issue #48 in March, Marvel announced Monday.

Unlike recent story arcs on the book, Liu and Perkins are on Astonishing X-Men for an open-ended run. The series will focus on Wolverine's side of the X-Men in the "Regenesis" era, and star Warbird, Northstar, Gambit, Cecila Reyes, Iceman and Karma.

"We all know that I love writing Gambit," said Liu, who wrote the character recently in X-23. "That was a no-brainer. I feel like the universe I was writing X-23 in is the same universe I'm writing Astonishing X-Men in."

The villains in the opening arc will be The Marauders, appearing without usual leader Mr. Sinister, who is currently the lead antagonist in Uncanny X-Men.

Generally, both Marvel editors as well as Liu and Perkins remained fairly secretive during the press call, with senior editor Nick Lowe stating that Astonishing X-Men will be the most surprising it's been since the first 12 issues of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's run on the series. Original story: Marvel's latest "Next Big Thing" conference call with the comic book press kicks off at 3 p.m. eastern, and we don't yet know who's going to be on the line or what exactly is going to be discussed. But we do know that they're announcing a new project launching in March, and the image to the right should be a clue.

This is actually the first of three such calls scheduled for this week, running one-a-day through Wednesday. For details as they happen, follow along with live coverage here:
