Comic Book Artists Support Young Fan with Charity Auction

Comic Book Artists Support Young Fan

Six-year-old Aidan Reed dealt with his 2010 acute lymphoblastic leukemia diagnosis in a rather unique way: drawing pictures of monsters and selling them (with help from family) on Etsy, and using the money to help pay for his chemotherapy.

These actions caught the attention of news outlets including NBC and the Huffington Post, and now the comic book industry is rallying to help support Reed.

In an effort to help raise money for Reed, Christine Mignola — sparked by Jon Lewis, who wrote Free Realms for DC's WildStorm imprint — gathered comic book artists including Bill Sienkiewicz, Walt Simonson, Guy Davis, Dave McKean, Eric Powell and her husband Mike Mignola to illustrate classic Universal Monsters themselves, with the intent of selling the drawings on eBay.

Aidan Reed.

Currently, 12 drawings are listed on the auction site, with a closing date of Nov. 25. The auctions are sponsored by Tom Crawford’s Leadership Children’s Foundation, and include a Bride of Frankenstein by Sienkiewicz; several renditions of the Creature from the Black Lagoon by Mignola, Dan Brerton, Katie Cook and more; and a Frankenstein's Monster by Powell. According to a press release from Lewis, Reed is still undergoing chemotherapy treatments, but currently is in remission and back in school. Lewis also has plans to write a short story, illustrated by comic creators, to also benefit Reed, though those plans are currently on hold.
