DC NEW 52 Month-to-Month Sales Charts: 15 Titles Gained

Newsarama and Comichron have presented a lot of figures and analysis about the October 2011 Direct Market sales over the last several days, including how DC's The New 52 have impacted industry-wide sales figures. But how does The New 52 stack up against itself from it's debut month through its sophomore frame?

With the help of some raw number crunching from Comichron, here's a thumbnail look at some month-to-month comparisons measuring a few performance metrics of DC's news-making reboot.

The first chart below shows monthly and combined sales of all 52 #1 issues from August through October, which includes reorders and reported sales of multiple printings. The chart is sorted by "reorder rate," which is the percentage of each title's total sales recorded by Diamond in October. Aquaman #1 led this category, selling 39% of it's total in October, though the fact that it initially went on sale on Septemer 28th probably factors into this high total.

Like any Diamond sales charts, the data comes with several qualifiers:

1.) Diamond's figures (as always) are sales made to comic book retailers, and not sales made to readers/customers.

2.) These figures are for North American stores only. They do not include copies distributed to the U.K. Comichron estimates that figure could account for up to 10% of sales to retailers not reported on the Diamond charts.

3.) 41 of the 52 issues' first printings (noted by asterisks) are "returnable," and Diamond has preemptively under-reported sales of these issues on their charts. Comichron estimates this figure is likely in the 10% range. Subsequent printings of all New 52 issues were not returnable. Meaning while the first printing of Detective Comics #1 was returnable, the second printing was not.

The second chart shows issue #2 sales compared to issue #1 sales. Sorted by the change in percentage, it shows which titles lost and in a number of cases, gained sales from the first issue to the second. As Comichron's figures show, a total of 15 titles actually increased their sales, including a 16% for Animal Man sales, an unusual occurrence in today's comic book industry, and line-wide sales from #1 to #2 dropped just 6%.

And again, it must be noted that Diamond also preemptively underreported sales of the returnable #2 issues.

These figures also come with more qualifiers.

According to Comichron, "the September #1s had additional sales in October, as well, to the tune of 19.5% of their September totals … It's not clear whether those are all reorders being reported, or Diamond logging the returnable over-run copies as sold…

“…But to compare apples to apples, at this point we have to look at initial, first-month demand — and here, it looks like, by the time retailers were ordering for October, they approached the market with a certain amount of additional confidence and cash."

In other words, when retailers finalized their orders for the #2 issues, they based their orders off September sales of #1 issues, and not sales of #1 issues in October.
