DC's THE NEW 52 Powers Over 50% of Comics Sales In October

Last Minute NEW 52 Previews for 10/19

Diamond Comic Distributors released their October 2011 preliminary sales charts and market share data Friday morning, and month 2 of DC’s New 52 reboot, was a big one for the publisher.

Powered by the continued strength of their top-selling titles like Justice League #2 (#1), Batman #2 (#2) and Action Comics #2 (#3), and presumably aided by the presence of second, third and even fourth printings of all their #1 issues from September, DC led all publishers with over 50% of unit market share (50.97%), and over 20% more than Marvel (30.29%), likely DC's largest market share ever and largest market share margin over their closest rival in the history of the Diamond era.

DC’s lead was strong but not quite as dramatic in dollar share, with the publisher accounting for 42.47% of all retail dollar orders in October, compared to Marvel’s 29.10%.

It should also be noted Diamond has reduced the reported sales of all of DC's returnable titles (like Detective Comics #2 and Superman #2, as noted by the asterisks in the Top 10 sales chart) by approximately 10%, and actual sales won't be known for several months.

Marvel wasn’t without some chart-toppers, with the debut issues of Incredible Hulk (#7) and Wolverine and the X-Men (#8) each cracking the Top 10 for the month.

DC’s big month was also likely aided by the debut of the Flashpoint hardcover collection, which was the industry’s bestselling graphic novel of October.

Looking at Year-to-Date sales, The New 52 has helped erase most of the deficit 2011 faced compared to 2010 and the year is now in positive sales territory, 0.64% in unit sales compared to last year through October. Dollar sales still lag behind 2010 by 1.93% but that figure appears as it will likely be made up by the end of 2011.

October represented a huge gain over its October 2010 counterpart, with comic book unit sales up 32.12% year-to-year, and overall sales up 25.89%. The dollar sales gain was a less impressive but still overall very positive 11.93%.

As a reminder, Diamond’s reported sales are orders placed and filled by comic book retailers. Diamond sales do not measure in-store sales to consumers.
