JUNE Comic Book Sales Up; Did the DCnU Make an Impact?

Diamond Comic Distributors released their preliminary June 2011 sales information for the comic book Direct Market on Friday, and any fan or pundit looking for indication of how DC’s reboot of their flagship superhero line in September is playing with fans and retailers, will probably going to have to keep looking.

The June Market Share between the two major publishers was pretty standard for the month, with standard monthly-leader Marvel accounting for 43.04% of units sold to retailers and 39.32% of dollars spent, versus DC’s 33.17% and 28.03%, respectively.

DC’s percentages actually improved over May, when they accounted for 28.37% of unit share and 26.68% of dollar share.

Those numbers come with a few pretty big caveats for anyone trying to extrapolate conclusions about the reception of the DC announcement in the marketplace. For one, DC’s initial announcement was made on May 31st, well after retailers had placed initial orders on all DC June titles. At that point retailers could only adjust two weeks worth of their DC orders up or down – June 22nd and June 29th.

Secondly, Diamond’s figures only reflect retailer wholesale orders, not in-store sales to customers, so it will likely be July before we see any indication that the “New 52” moved sales up or down, or any direction at all, for DC.

Somewhat interestingly, Marvel Comics once again dominated the Top 10 comic book chart, 7 titles to DC’s 3, whereas in recent months its been more routinely split, or with DC registering a higher number of Top 10 titles.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #160, featuring the death of Peter Parker was June’s top-seller, followed by Fear Itself #3. Flashpoint #2 was DC’s first entry on the top of the chart, at #3 for June.

The Walking Dead took its usual spot on the top of the graphic novel chart whenever it releases a new trade paperback or hardcover – this time for TPB Vol. 14: No Way Out.

The good news is June is that comic book sales overall were way up over May 2011 and down only a small percentage over June 2010.

Comics sales were up 20.26 % month-to-month, graphic novel sales up 10.63%, for a combined 19.37% positive jump over May.

Comics sales versus June 2010 were down just 1.43% and 2.63% overall.

To date, 2011 sales for the first half of year are down 7.47% over the first half of 2010, and 7.74% overall.
