Ultimate Comics Universe Reborn - LIVE!
Update, 1 p.m. eastern time: Nick Spencer and Paco Medina are the creative team of Ultimate Comics: X-Men, as revealed during Tuesday's press conference. The series debuts in September, and stars Kitty Pryde, Bobby Drake, Johnny Storm, Rogue and James Hudson. Jean Grey, Colossus and Storm will also be involved. "As a result of Magneto's attack that we saw in Ultimatum, the government has taken a much more aggressive stance," Spencer said during the call. "We're really in a Days of Future Past-type scenario."
The nature of mutation in the Ultimate Universe, as revealed in Ultimate Origins, will play a major role in Spencer's plans for the book. "As we all learned in Ultimate Origins, mutants in the Ultimate Universe are not the next step in evolution, they are actually the product of lab experiments in the United States government," the writer said. "That information is going to go public, and the entire world is going to learn that the government created mutants." Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso was also on the line during the call, and suggested a possible future crossover between Ultimate Comics: Ultimates (revealed on Monday to be starting in August with Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic on board), Ultimate Comics: X-Men and whatever form the Ultimate Spider-Man series takes after "Death of Spider-Man." Spencer told Newsarama that it's a liberating feeling to be writing an X-Men comic in a world where Cyclops, Wolverine, Professor X and Magneto are all dead. "I think it's what makes it more exciting," Spencer said. "These kids are living in a world where the legends are dead. This is more than just 'the dream is dead,' this is, 'both sides of the argument are dead.' That is just so much more fascinating. To me, what was really intriguing to me about where they were now is just in that. These kids have heard both sides, and seen both sides fail miserably. A lot of X-books have been built around that idea, that we're just one step away from everything going to Hell, and in the Ultimate Universe, that's happened. We're there. It's too late to put the genie back in the bottle. This relationship between humans and mutants is not going to repair itself." Spencer said the book will primarily star Kitty Pryde and Rogue (adding that the Ultimate version of the former is, in his estimation, one of the great characters of the last five to 10 years), and will see plenty of newly created characters as well. Original Story: The second of Marvel's fourth "Ultimate Comics Universe Reborn" conference call with the press is about to get started, right around noon eastern time. The general purpose of this series of press conference is to answer some of the many questions of the status of the Ultimate Universe following the currently unfolding "Death of Spider-Man" storyline. Once again, we don't know who exactly is going to be on the line, but yesterday writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Esad Ribic spoke to reporters, announcing their new ongoing series Ultimate Comics Ultimates, starting in August. It's a good bet this call might be similarly newsworthy — perhaps featuring another one of Hickman's Ultimate Fallout co-writers, Nick Spencer or Brian Michael Bendis? Of course, Newsarama will be there on the line, providing live coverage in the box below. If you're not able to follow along live, check back in this space for a recap of any and all pertinent information. Until then, enjoy the cover for Ultimate Fallout #2.
