With Fear Itself #1, you feel that Matt Fraction doesn't just have two different objectives for his story, but three. It's an event comic, designed to sell more comics and direct Marvel's overarching direction for some time to come. It's a movie launchpad, designed to capitalize on Captain America and Thor before their films come out this summer. And last -- but possibly most important -- Fear Itself is supposed to be an allegory for anxiety. People are feeling anxious, feeling scared, as the recession and Wall Street and war are limiting their income and turning their future into ash. Even the comic book industry is feeling the walls close in, with 100K max sales and the New York Times saying that the writing's on the wall.
