DC Responds to Dwayne McDuffie Tribute Criticism

DC Responds to Dwayne McDuffie Tweet

In response to a tweet by artist Tommy Lee Edwards questioning DC's plans to honor the passing of creator Dwayne McDuffie last month, DC Entertainment released a statement Wednesday afternoon clarifying their plans.

Edwards, who early in his career illustrated the 1995 miniseries My Name is Holocaust for the McDuffie co-founded imprint Milestone Media, posted the following to his Twitter account Tuesday evening:

"DC is planning a Dwayne McDuffie 'tribute' book, but has no plans to donate profits to the poor guy's surviving family or any charity," reads the Tweet.

Wednesday, DC responded with this written statement:

"Before Dwayne McDuffie's tragic death, an editorial decision was made to reschedule the planned, ongoing STATIC SHOCK series for later this year.

"When we heard of Dwayne's unexpected passing, we decided it was appropriate to have an oversized STATIC SHOCK comic book this spring, with the ongoing series still starting later this year as planned.

"This June, Felicia Henderson, Denys Cowan, Prentis Rollings, Eric Battle, John Rozum, Matt Wayne, John Paul Leon and others will contribute to a STATIC SHOCK Special, with a cover by JH Williams III.

"This Special is our way of acknowledging the industry's loss. It is not a tribute comic intended to raise proceeds for charity.

"We regret if there was any confusion regarding our intentions caused by the solicitation of this project."

The handling of the project appears consistent with past DC efforts of this kind. In July and August 2004, DC published 8 “tribute specials” dedicated to editorial legend Julie Schwartz after his passing earlier that year.  The specials were already in the works to honor Schwartz’s 60th Anniversary with DC before his passing, and published as a tribute upon his death. Newsarama did not find any public record of DC pledging the proceeds to Schwartz’s family or charity.

News of McDuffie's passing broke on Feb. 22 of this year.

The Static Shock Special is scheduled for June and DC released its full solicitation earlier this week.
