Axel Alonso Promoted to MARVEL E-i-C
Update: It looks like Tom Brevoort — Axel Alonso's fellow vice president, executive editor — is also getting a promotion, to senior vice president of publishing, as revealed by Joe Quesada on his Twitter account.Original Story: Axel Alonso is the new editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, the publisher announced Tuesday. Alonso replaces Joe Quesada in the role, who had served as editor-in-chief since 2000; the longest tenure in that position other than Stan Lee's reign from 1945 to 1972. Quesada will remain in the company as chief creative officer, a position he took on last year.
Alonso also joined the company in 2000, after a previous stint as an editor at DC's Vertigo imprint. Alonso had served as the editor of the X-Men family of books, and most recently held the title of vice president, executive editor, a title also held by long-time Marvel editor Tom Brevoort. Since adding the position of chief creative officer, Quesada had made several public statements that many of the day-to-day duties of editor-in-chief were effectively being performed by Alonso and Brevoort in their capacity as co-VP, executive editors. "Most of you know Axel from his high profile job as Vice President, Executive Editor and the man behind some of our very best and edgiest books," said Quesada in Marvel's official statement. "Time and time again, Axel has proven that he is one of the very best story editors in the history of our medium and one of the finest people I know." As an editor, Alonso worked on controversial titles including the Peter Milligan and Mike Allred X-Force run that led to Marvel dropping the Comics Code Authority, and Rawhide Kid, which revealed the 1950s Old West character to be gay. He also served as the editor of the Marvel Knights line, which was founded by Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti in 1998. "Marvel has a great history of the most dynamic and memorable EiCs in comics history and I’m honored to step into this role," said Alonso in the statement. "I’ve been blessed to work with some of the most creative men and women in the world, bringing to life some of the most compelling stories you’ll find in any medium."
