Is INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #500 the 'Death of Tony Stark'?

Marvel: "Point One" For New Readers

Marvel Comics has been previewing Invincible Iron Man #500 this week on their official website, and Tuesday brought a surprising glimpse — the apparent death of Tony Stark, seen in an excerpt from writer Matt Fraction's script and the accompanied unlettered page by artists Carmine Di Giandomenico and Matt Wilson.

The script is pretty straight-forward: "Tony Stark dies." Yet the page appears to most likely be a look at the future, given Tony Stark's white hair and the overall theme of the issue. In an October interview with Newsarama, Fraction noted, "We the reader are traveling through time."

In November, Marvel promoted the "Death of Spider-Man," a crossover starting in February between Ultimate Comics Spider-Man and Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates. The publisher has also strongly suggested that January's Fantastic Four #587 will contain the death of one of the team's original members.

Invincible Iron Man #500 is out on January 19. Monday's preview showed the return of classic Iron Man nemesis The Mandarin, seen most recently in this year's Invincible Iron Man Annual #1. More previews are promised throughout the week.
