The first round is over, and well, there weren't a lot of surprises in this one. Every higher rank one in all but one of the polls, showing that our contributors who made the nominations and the readers of the site have closer tastes than we may have expected!

The clear winners were not all that surprising, with folks like Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns, and Robert Kirkman winning their respective brackets with ease. The closest poll, and the only upset of the first round, had 9th seeded Rick Remender defeating 8th seeded Judd Winick by about 40 votes at the closing mark.

Now onto the next one!

Remember, you don’t have to be a registered Newsarama reader to participate. EVERYONE can help choose by picking one choice in each of the below brackets. Again, there are four of them in Round 2, so keep going until you’ve voted in ALL four brackets. Voting for Round 2 will remain open for 1 week.

Newsarama Note: Full methodology for nomination is below the polls. Voting is open until Sunday, Dec 19 at 5pm EST.

10 Newsarama contributors submitted their lists for their personal Top 20 in each of the five categories. The results were tabulated using a weighted system that awarded an escalating number points according to how high the nominee appeared on the list - 20th place was worth 1 point, 19th place 2 points ... up to 20 points for 1st place.

The final nominee lists are the top 16 nominees with the highest point totals in each category.

Each bracket is seeded according to point total, with the highest vote-getter in each bracket moving onto the next round.

There will be 4 total rounds for each category (the “Sinister 16”, "Extremis 8", “Fantastic Four” and Finals) eventually resulting in one overall “Favorite of 2010” for each group.
