Rhys Ifans Cast in SPIDER-MAN

UPDATE, 10/14: The Wrap has reported that Rhys Ifans will be playing Dr. Curt Connors — a.k.a the Lizard — so the 39.72% of you who voted "someone else entirely" were definitely onto something.

Also, looks like Webb was speaking fairly literally when speaking of "warmth" and "rage," given the dual nature of the character.

ORIGINAL STORY: Rhys Ifans has been cast in 2012's Spider-Man film as a villain, but exactly which character he'll be playing is yet to be revealed.

"What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker," said Spider-Man director Marc Webb in the Sony Pictures press release confirming the news. "Rhys' incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character."

Ifans, 43, has acted in movies including Notting Hill and Hannibal Rising, and portrays Xenophilius Lovegood in the upcoming two-part Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The Welsh actor will play opposite British actor Andrew Garfield, playing the title role. American Emma Stone was cast as Gwen Stacy last week.
