Noel Neill, Teri Hatcher, Margot Kidder, Kate Bosworth and Erica Durance. These actresses share at least one thing in common – they’ve all played Lois Lane. She’s a successful reporter in her own right but is best known as Superman’s better half and casting her is a pain in the ass.
Christopher Nolan is still searching for a director for the next Superman film but five names have emerged just recently as finalists: Tony Scott, Matt Reeves, Jonathan Liebesman, Duncan Jones and Zack Snyder. The latest from the rumor mill on the other hand adds one more name to that list – Darren Aronofsky.
An out-of-left-field choice if ever there was one. If you’ve seen any of Aronofsky’s work you know he’s not the blockbuster type. So where does this all come from? “Sources say” Nolan has been speaking to the director, this according to the L.A. Times. But here’s where it gets more convoluted. The next rumor has Natalie Portman up for the role of Lois Lane.
Is it a coincidence that Aronofsky and Portman just happen to be starting publicity rounds for their film Black Swan being released in December?
Regardless, Portman as Lois? Eh. She’s a great actress no doubt, one of my favorites in fact, but I don’t see her as Lois at all. Truth be told, I’ve gotten quite used to seeing Erica Durance encapsulating all the qualities I think that character should have on Smallville. Considering they don’t have a Superman yet either maybe they could graduate Tom Welling to the big screen and bring her with. I’d love to see Durance get a chance to play Lois in a movie though I somehow doubt Warner Bros. would even consider going in that direction.
So what qualities am I looking for in a Lois Lane? Top on my list: moxie. Lois needs the skills of a detective and the courage to use them, even if it gets her into trouble. She needs to be able to stand up to her boss or the worst supervillain on the planet. And of course do it all while wearing high heels and a pencil skirt. (Though hopefully she gets to wear a pair of jeans this time around.) An unshakable moral compass is also a plus.
What actresses out there today have all those qualities? A few thousand I’d say but for sake of argument here let’s go with women who’ve already been in the movies, shall we? Most actresses should be able to play any role (within reason of course) as long as they’re talented enough but here are a few I can see stepping into the shoes of the intrepid reporter.
Courtney Cox. Wait! Don’t jump down my throat for this one yet. Think about it. Who has been rumored to be in the running for Superman? Mad Men’s John Hamm, certainly a more mature actor. Granted, I don’t think there’s much too that rumor but if in some alternate universe it did happen, it would be weird if they paired him with someone too young. Cox looks just like I’d imagine an older Lois would. Plus she’s already played a reporter in Scream, albeit a really sleazy one. She was nothing if not aggressive though, which every good reporter needs to be. Especially so you don’t get murdered by the psychopath.
Michelle Monaghan has done films with big name actors like Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr. and Morgan Freeman but has yet to make a household name for herself. Why? I’m not sure. She’s a great actress and has a certain twinkle in her eye that reminds me of Lois when she’s telling Clark she won’t run off and do stupid thing X but does so anyway.
Kate Beckinsale’s name has come up in this topic of discussion more than once. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say it’s because she’s hot. But she’s also a wonderful actress. The America’s Sweetheart type who could play “cute as apple pie” or “I’m going to rip your throat out” vampire. Neither of those are Lois but if nothing else, this gal’s got range.
Diane Kruger certainly showed courage in the face of evil in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds. As Bridget von Hammersmark, the actress/spy, she held vigilant even when put in impossible situations. Throw in her roles in National Treasure and Troy (as Helen) and I think you’ll see what I see in her. Her strong jaw line and piercing blue eyes don’t hurt either. I think I actually see a little Margot Kidder in her now that I think about it. Normally I’d be against casting a blonde just for the sake of authenticity (*cough*Blake Lively*cough*) in the character but in this case, I’d overlook it.
I don’t know what Rachel McAdams real hair color is and I don’t care. She’s drop dead gorgeous and the spunkiest of the bunch. Just look at her acceptance of Best Kiss at the MTV Movie Awards from a few years back. I can picture Lois doing that, in fact she did once. McAdams’ has also had a wide range of roles and is more than believable in all of them. I can see her stirring up a lot of trouble as Lois, in more than one way.Who do you think should play Lois in the new movie?
