Venom, Sony's 2018 Sony Spider-Man spin-off movie, may be the latest superhero film to be eyeing an R-rating, according to Collider. The report cites studio chatter as the basis for the rumor. In comic books, Venom does carry a level of violence above most leading characters as ananti-hero and self-styled "Lethal Protector."
After the massive success of Deadpool, R-rated comic book movies have been something of a craze, though so far only 20th Century Fox has taken the plunge with the aforementioned Daredevil and the recent Logan. Warner Bros. has experimented with the idea with R-rated cuts of both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad making it to home video.
Little is known about the Venom film, including how or if it will connect to Sony and Marvel's upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, Venom was reportedly recently assigned a release date of October 5, 2018.
