Whoever Sylvester Stallone is playing in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 must be someone relatively important, as now director James Gunn says Stallone's character and Kurt Russell's Ego, the Living Planet, will likely appear in other Marvel movies.
"This is definitely not a one-off [for them]," Gunn told Fandango. "They’re both characters that we’ve taken a lot of time to develop, and they’re a big part of the MCU now."
Gunn has not revealed who Stallone is playing, but early footage shown at a set visit during filming reportedly showed him in Ravager gear, and Gunn recently said he's playing an established Marvel character.
Gunn gave no indication of when or in which films Stallone and Russell's characters may appear. But with the all-hands-on-deck Avengers: Infinity War and its unnamed sequel currently in production, it may be sooner rather than later.
This is the second time in a week Gunn has implied the Stallone role is a key one.
"We do have a couple of characters who are very important to the Marvel Universe who are going to make their debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which people don't know about," Gunn revealed on The Adam Carolla Show last week. "Sylvester Stallone plays one of these characters...my friend Michael Rosenbaum also has a pretty decent movie in the role as well and it sort of works in tandem with Sly's character."
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is due out in theaters May 5.
