Opening box office numbers for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story have begun to trickle in, showing that the Star Wars "anthology" tale took in $29 million on just Thursday night. This earns Rogue One the top North American Thursday box office of 2016, edging out other blockbusters such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($27.5m) and Captain America: Civil War ($25m), according to BoxOffice.com. Rogue One has also begun opening in foreign markets, for a total overseas gross of $33m on its opening night.

At $29m, Rogue One still falls short of Star Wars: The Force Awakens $57m. Projections for its weekend total vary wildy - from $129m to $200m according to different models, so it's probably just best to wait for Friday figures to begin those estimates.
