Angela Bassett has been cast as Ramonda in Marvel Studios' upcoming Black Panther. Marvel describes Ramonda as the mother of T'Challa, however in comic books she is his step-mother, raising him with T'Chaka after the death of the then-King's first wife, N'Yami.

Bassett currently appears in American Horror Story, but is perhaps best known for her starring roles in How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Strange Days. The native New Yorker is no stranger to comic book adaptions, playing Amanda Waller in 2011's Green Lantern and Linda Lake in CBS's 1990s The Flash series.

Black Panther is scheduled to open in theaters February 16.
