Darth Maul is joining the Marvel Comics/Star Wars line-up with a new series set before Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. The five-issue Darth Maul title, written by Cullen Bunn with art from Luke Ross, will delve into the Zabrak Sith Lord's early days, including his tutelage under Darth Sidious.

Darth Maul will explore the young Sith's anger as he tests his mettle by challenging a young Jedi Padawan named Eldra Kaitis who has been taken captive by a crimelord. In the course of their encounter, Maul will attempt to woo Kaitis to the Dark Side, but may almost be swayed himself.

"A big part of the story is Darth Maul’s descent to the dark side and almost being tempted away from it,” Bunn told USA Today, explaining that Sidious is "not a very warm teacher" to Darth Maul.

Darth Maul #1 is scheduled to debut in February.
