BATMAN, DC Sit Atop Comic Book Sales Charts Again in September

It looks like DC Comics' decision to double down (twice-monthly shipping) on their bestselling franchises at a lower price point is paying off… at least for now.

According to sales figures released by Diamond Comic Distributors Friday morning, the publisher is the Direct Market sales leader for the third consecutive month subsequent to the June launch of their Rebirth initiative, although their win is on the eve of the start of Marvel’s own line-wide relaunch.

Batman #6 was September's bestselling comic book, and DC accounted for 8 of the Top 10 comic book titles of the month, with Marvel’s Civil War II #5 (#4) and Image’s The Walking Dead #158 (#6) the only non-DC books on the chart.

The first three titles are all Batman titles, in fact, with All-Star Batman #2 and Batman #7 ranking #2 and #3, respectively. This is significant for a few reasons. Not only has DC apparently carried over the sales stature of the Scott Snyder-Greg Capullo Batman run to the Rebirth version written by Tom King, Snyder has also seemingly replicated it successfully on a brand new franchise with All-Star despite its $4.99 price point, giving DC a potent 1-2(-3) punch.

Image’s The Walking Dead Vol. 26: Call To Arms was the bestselling graphic novel of September.

Again, for the third consecutive month DC led both Market Share categories – 43.45% of unit sales to Marvel’s 30.75% and 36.53% of dollar units to Marvel’s 31.40%, with the disparity between the spreads mostly attributable to DC’s new lower $2.99 price point on most of their line.

Despite having only four shipping weeks as compared to September 2015’s five, overall sales were up this year versus last. Comic book unit sales were up nearly 16% percent over the same month last year and dollar sales up 9%, again with the difference mostly chalked up DC’s lower price point.

Graphic novel sales were way down comparatively, however, nearly 11% in dollar sales, resulting in an overall just 2.20% dollar gain over last year, but again, in one less shipping week.

Overall year-to-date 2016 sales are 2.65% up over 2015, and with Marvel's relaunch coming in the year's final quarter, it looks like a good bet that 2016 will keep the streak of year growth going in the Direct Market.
