It's not secret that John Krasinski of The Office was one of the final candidates to play the big screen Captain America, but his reasons for not taking the job weren't exactly clear until now. According to Krasinski, we have Chris Hemsworth's physique to thank for Chris Evans getting the part of Steve Rogers.

“I was putting on the suit just watching it, and like, this is so amazing. And I got about right to my waist, I was still shirtless and feeling pretty good about myself - wasn’t 13 Hours yet but felt pretty good,” Krasinski explained on Conan. “All of a sudden Chris Hemsworth walked by as Thor and went ‘Hey mate’, and I went ‘I’m good. This is stupid, I shouldn’t - It’s okay, I’m not going to be Captain America, it’s fine.’”

The role wound up going to Chris Evans, who apparently was not intimidated at the idea of portraying a Super Soldier physique.

Krasinski did go on to famously build a muscular body for his role in 13 Hours - something he may yet get a chance to show off in a Marvel movie.

“My whole thing is I’m such a huge fan of the Marvel movies, so if there are any characters left for sure, bang the drum,” Krasinksi told Collider. “Just to be in that world, they’re really well-made and they seem like they’re having a lot of fun and I happen to be friends with a whole bunch of those guys and girls, so to me it would be a great time, I’d love it.”

Krasinksi isn't the only close call for Marvel movies in his family. His wife, Emily Blunt, was the original choice for Black Widow in Iron Man 2 before scheduling conflicts forced her to drop out of filming.

Krasinski will next appear in Amazon's Jack Ryan TV series, taking on the role previously played by both Harrison Ford and Chris Pine, as well as others.
