Viewers of the 2016 Rio Olympics closing ceremony got a special surprise: Nintendo's Mario. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe appeared during the closing ceremony dressed as Mario from the popular Super Mario game series, which was created in his country. Abe was there to represent Japan, who will be hosting the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo as Rio quite literally passed the Torch to the next host country.

Abe popped out of an oversized green drainpipe dressed as Mario, after a video package athletes interacting with characters from Japanese pop culture including Hello Kitty and Doraemon.
