Alpha Flight, the space agency that was formerly Canada's premier super-team, is going back to its roots in Civil War II: Choosing Sides #5, teaming up with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Trudeau will appear on a variant cover for Choosing Sides #5 in his trademark boxing gear, emblazoned with the Canadian maple leaf drawn by Toronto-based artist Ramon Perez.
"I didn't want to do a stuffy cover — just like a suit and tie — put his likeness on the cover and call it a day," Perez told National News Watch. "I wanted to kind of evoke a little bit of what's different about him than other people in power right now. You don't see Barack Obama strutting around in boxing gear, doing push-ups in commercials or whatnot. Just throwing him in his gear and making him almost like an everyday person was kind of fun."
As for the story behind the cover, Canadian writer/artist Chip Zdarsky will pen Alpha Flight's appearance, and it was his idea to include Trudeau. In the story, Alpha Flight returns to Canada from their assignment in space to seek advice from the Canadian leader.
"I didn't want this to just be like a walk-on ... rescued by superheroes and he thanks them and that's the end of the story," Zdarsky explained. "I think a lot of these real-life appearances in comics tend to go that way. I liked the idea of him actually engaging them in an ethical debate.”
"It's a little tricky just because once you start to put words in the prime minister's mouth, we acknowledge that this is basically Trudeau fan fiction," he continued. "I had to kind of think about where he would stand on something like that and how he would handle it. Hopefully, I did a good job. Maybe I'll get a call from him saying: 'How could you have me saying that to ... Iron Man?'"
No mention is made on if Trudeau approved or is even aware that his likeness is being used for a Marvel comic book, however he is contributing to another comic book with an Canadian hero. The Canadian Prime Minister penned a letter of support for another comic book: Trudeau has penned a letter on behalf of cartoonist Richard Comely's Captain Canuck in honor of Canada Day that will appear in Chapterhouse Comics Summer Special. He'll also appear alongside Captain Canuck on the cover.
Civil War II: Choosing Sides #5 hits shelves August 31, while Chapterhouse Comics Summer Special is due out July 1.
