ELIZABETH BANKS Claims Sony Thought She Was Too Old for 2002's SPIDER-MAN

Pitch Perfect director and upcomingPower Rangers actress Elizabeth Banks has claimed she auditioned for the role of Mary Jane in Sony's 2002 Spider-Man film, but was told she was "too old" for the part.

“Tobey [Maguire] and I are basically the same age — and I was told I was too old to play her,” Banks told Glamour (via Variety). “I was like, ‘Oh, OK, that’s what I’ve signed up for.”

Banks is 16 months older than Maguire, who played Peter Parker in the film, and was 28 at the time. The role eventually went to Kirsten Dunst, who was 17 at the time of filming.

Banks was eventually hired for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man franchise however, playing Betty Brant in 2004's Spider-Man 2.
