Godzilla director Gareth Edwards has dropped out of the planned 2018 sequel, according to Deadline. Edwards, who is currently in post-production on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, had planned to direct two Godzilla films after the box-office success of the 2014 Warner Bros. film.
The Hollywood trade describes Edwards' split from Godzilla 2 as "an amicable one," and was said to be in an effort for the director to focus on his own "smaller in scale" projects after the Star Wars film.
Screnwriter Max Borenstein has written the latest draft of Godzilla 2, which is currently scheduled for release March 22, 2019. A subsequent crossover film, Godzilla vs. Kong, is scheduled for May 20, 2020.
