The most recent trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse ended with a bang - or rather, a "snikt" - as it strongly suggested Wolverine will have at least a cameo in the film. But according to director Bryan Singer, those popped claws may not be exactly what they seem.

“Make of that what you want,” Singer told Empire. “I will say, it’s not simple. There’s something more pivotal that occurs with that. It hints to a sequence that again fits within the canon of all six movies, and the birth of a new direction. It’s not insignificant, nor is it simply just a throw-in.”

Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman has made it clear that his next solo movie will be his last outing as Logan – but Singer’s comments about a “new direction” call that into question. Could Apocalypse signal the start of Jackman passing the torch to another actor – or character? Could those claws belong to someone else entirely?

As for how much Wolverine will be in the actual film, Singer isn't saying.

“It’s not the only shot you’re gonna see, let’s put it that way.”

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27.
