Fans have been speculating about the nature of the vandalized Robin costume seen in the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer since it was first glimpsed, and now Geoff Johns has confirmed that Batman keeps it in remembrance of his "fallen ally."

"You can extrapolate that if Batman kept his suit like that, it's a reminder," Johns told Entertainment Weekly. "He’s displayed the suit of a fallen ally, fallen friend in the center of the Batcave. It’s right there for a reason, and part of it is to fuel him to continue to do what he does."

Johns didn't reveal to which Robin the suit belonged, or what became of the Robin who wore it. However, fan speculation has tied the fate of Robin in Batman v Superman to the Joker, who appears in Suicide Squad and who, in comic books, killed the second Robin, Jason Todd.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters March 25.
