Walt Disney Studios have announced that Star Wars: Episode VIII will be pushed back from its original release date of May 26, 2017 to December 15, 2017. No reason was given for the delay, but Disney notes that this new release date puts it in the same “popular holiday movie-going corridor” as Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

This date change will put it up against Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One.

Rian Johnson will begin filming Star Wars: Episode VII next month in London.

Coming in to fill that release date hole of May 26, 2017 will be Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, moving up from its original July 7, 2017 date.
