Round 2 - Fight!1 of 12This week, a new trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice premiered, giving a surprisingly in-depth look at what fans can expect when the film hits theaters March 25, 2016.
From the reveal of the film's surprise villain, to the clash between Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent, to the final moments when DC's "trinity" comes together, there's a lot to take in in this brief video.
Fortunately, we've watched the trailer over and over (and over and over) again, pulling out the most important and interesting bits, and we now present ten things worth noticing in the new Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer.
More Than Meets The Eye2 of 12There’s a lot going on in the new Batman v Superman trailer. From the odd score, to the off-kilter pacing, and surprising sense of humor, it’s not your typical blockbuster film trailer. In fact, the whole thing could be seen as a “supercut” of the movie... as we know it to be, at least.
First, the heroes meet. Then, they fight. Enter Luthor, the villain of the piece, followed by the twist – Doomsday. Finally, we get the triumphant moment when our heroes join forces, joined by Wonder Woman, to take on the common threat.
Sure, there’s undoubtedly more to this film than we’ve seen yet – Aquaman still has yet to show his face, and there are several actors, such as Scoot McNairy and Jena Malone whose roles have yet to be disclosed. Still, there’s a surprising amount of information in this trailer.
Batman's Brand Of Justice3 of 12There are a lot of clues about Batman’s place in Gotham in this trailer, from a glimpse of the Batcave, to his inference to the Joker, to a newspaper clipping that shows Batman’s symbol branded on a criminal. And, after the gritty realism of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, there’s also a little more of a comic book aspect to Batman v Superman’s Caped Crusader.
Even Batman’s voice is “comic book-y” – just like Ben Affleck’s transatlantic take on Bruce Wayne’s accent. But then there’s the little matter of what appears to be Batman’s gun. Seen in the first trailer, it looks as though Batman is also carrying a shotgun-like weapon in the climactic moment of this new trailer. Could the Dark Knight really be packing heat? Or just a grappling gun like in Dark Knight Returns?
"If I wanted it, you'd be dead already."4 of 12Superman may have the goods on Batman – after all, he’s got unmatched strength, invulnerability, and a slew of other amazing powers. And it seems he’s all too keenly aware of his edge over the Caped Crusader.
In one line, Superman demonstrates just how much power he has over Batman. “If I wanted it, you’d be dead already.” This line also demonstrates just how frustrated Superman is with Batman’s tenacity – and maybe how close Batman might really be to beating the Man of Steel.
Not So Super?5 of 12The match up between Batman and Superman may seem pretty one-sided. After all, Superman has all the power in the world, and Batman is, well, just a well-equipped guy. But as comic books have shown, Batman knows how to fight the Man of Steel. In fact, in comic books, Batman’s got a secret weapon – kryptonite.
And, judging by several scenes in this trailer, Batman might have something similar up his sleeve when he takes on Superman. It may not be kryptonite, but judging by Batman sending Superman plummeting through a skylight and, yes, making good on his promise from the first trailer by making Superman bleed, there’s something giving Batman an edge.
Parademons?6 of 12There’s a sequence in the desert in which Superman appears to hold Batman captive – but there’s clearly more to the scene than meets the eye. For one thing, there’s the matter of the strange, winged creatures that appear to be attacking the soldiers that are attacking Batman.
Could these be Parademons, the winged cannon-fodder army of Darkseid, lord of Apokolips? Darkseid is rumored to be the villain of the impending Justice League movie – a movie that has its roots in Batman v Superman. Are the seeds of that conflict going to be sewn so early?
Of course, there’s another possibility. This entire desert scene may be a dream sequence. An action figure version of Batman’s desert look was referred to as “Knightmare Batman,” which, combined with Superman’s demeanor in the scene, has lead many fans to speculate that what we’re seeing isn’t actually real.
Lex Luthor7 of 12Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor gets a spotlight in this trailer, painting him as the movie’s main antagonist. It’s Luthor who engineers the conflict between Batman and Superman, and it’s Luthor who possibly creates the weapon that might actually take down Superman – more on that later.
But for now, it’s important to note just how, well, crazy Eisenberg’s Luthor seems. From his smarmy introduction between Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent, to his speech about “the devil” beating “God” – Superman. Luthor doesn’t seem to be holding much back in the way of out and out villainy.
By the way, doesn't he look a lot like Marvel's villain, Arcade?
Bruce Wayne v Clark Kent8 of 12It’s not just Batman and Superman who are at each others’ throats in this trailer – it’s their alter egos, Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent. Wayne and Kent go at it at what appears to be an event possibly held by Lex Luthor, with Kent confronting Wayne about the vigilante in Gotham, while Wayne calls out Kent for the Daily Planet’s “puff pieces” about Superman.
The basis of the conflict between Batman and Superman is laid out right here. Superman is skeptical of Batman’s methods, while Batman doesn’t trust an alien to protect humanity.
Doomsday9 of 12That’s right – Doomsday. In all his brutal glory. The creature that killed Superman may be the real threat at the heart of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And, if the implications of the trailer are correct, Doomsday may just have a deep connection to Superman’s previous nemesis, Zod.
Judging by Luthor’s speech and the shots of Zod’s corpse in possession of LexCorp certainly makes it seem like Doomsday will be created, at least in part, from the remnants of Zod’s kryptonian corpse - at the hands of Lex Luthor, no less.
"He brought the war to us."10 of 12Batman’s declaration that Superman “brought the war to us” may simply refer to the destruction wrought by his climactic fight with Zod – or it may mean something more. If the speculation about Parademons, the truth about Doomsday, and other potential baddies add up, there may be another “war” at the center of Batman v Superman.
And, if so, the true seeds of the Justice League movie may be planted right here. After all, it takes a threat too big for one hero to bring multiple heroes together. Could that threat originate in Batman v Superman?
Justice League United11 of 12In the trailer’s crowning moment, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman unite to take on the rampaging Doomsday. It’s thrilling to see DC’s “trinity” stand together on screen for the first time, and the promise of what’s to come when the Justice League officially forms only adds to that excitement.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice marks the start of DC’s shared cinematic universe in earnest. And while many elements of what’s to come have yet to be seen, for many fans, this moment is the culmination of years of waiting. Usually, you have to wait for a post-credits stinger for this kind of big moment, but this time we got it in the trailer.
Makes you wonder what they’re holding back…
