Yesterday, it was reported that Oldboy actress Pom Klementieff had been cast in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in an unidentified role, after Marvel undertook an exhaustive search for an Asian actress.
Now, a new report from Deadline states that Klementieff's character is none other than Mantis, a character with longrunning ties to both the Avengers and the Guardians.
Created in the '70's by Steve Engleheart and Don Heck, in comic books Mantis is the daughter of the villain Libra, and is sometimes called the "Celestial Madonna," a being of mythic power. She served as a member of the Avengers in the '70's, and later again in the '90's. More recently, Mantis was a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy during the Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning run that inspired the film's line-up.
Interestingly, Mantis also has strong ties to Kang the Conqueror, a villain director James Gunn has said he was interested in, but was prevented from using due to his connection to 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four license.
If accurate, Deadline's report would corroborate Newsarama's theory about Klementieff's mystery role.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is slated to hit theaters May 5, 2017.
