Daniel Bruhl is bringing the Marvel villain Baron Zemo to the big screen in Captain America: Civil War, but according to Bruhl, the version fans get in the film won't be quite the same as the one they recognize in the comic books.

"He does not wear the mask," Bruhl told Business Insider, referring to the purple hood that covers his mangled face in comic books. "You would be surprised, it's different than what you'd think. It's loosely connected to this character. But that's what I like about the Marvel guys, some of the characters and things they're dealing with always reference to current events so my character is from a different area than you would think."

Based on these comments, it seems as though Zemo won't be a former Nazi operative as "you would think" knowing him from comic books, but that doesn't mean his legacy isn't intact. The modern Baron Zemo is the son of the original, a Nazi mad scientist who challenged Captain America during World War II - and, in comic books, was even responsible for the apparent death of Bucky.

But just because Bruhl won't wear the mask off the bat, that doesn't mean there isn't potential for him to get there.

"There's a possibility," said Bruhl of the potential for Zemo to return in future films. "That's the way it's written."

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters May 6, 2016.
