TheWrap reports that Marvel Studios is close to inking a deal with Amber Lake screenwriter Joe Robert Cole to pen its upcoming Black Panther film. Cole previously wrote a draft of an Inhumans script as part of the same Marvel writer's program that produced Nicole Perlman's Guardians of the Galaxy script, which was successfully adapted to screen in 2014.

The same report also plays down earlier reports that Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray is the most recent frontrunner to direct Black Panther, with TheWrap citing its own report that Gray is now the top choice to direct Fast and Furious 8.

Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman as the titular Wakandan monarch who will make his debut as the character in next summer's Captain America: Civil War, while his solo film is set to hit theaters on July 6, 2018.
