After the success of Straight Outta Compton, director F. Gary Gray is one of Hollywood's hottest directors and is reportedly vying for not one but two franchise movies -- Fast and Furious 8 and Black Panther. Variety reports that Gray is one of four named contenders for the street race movie, and one of an unnamed number vying for Black Panther. Fast and Furious 8 is scheduled for release April 14, 2017 and Black Panther for July 6, 2018, making it unlikely that Gray (or any director) could do both.
Chadwick Boseman has already been cast as T'Challa, a.k.a. Black Panther, and will debut in 2016's Captain America: Civil War.
If accurate however, this wouldn't be the first time Gray has been in talks with Marvel. In 2012, he was one of the final contenders to direct Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but withdrew after committing to direct Straight Outta Compton.
Rumors about Gray directing Black Panther have been going on for some time. During the August promotional tour for Straight Outta Compton, BlackTree TV asked the director about directing a superhero movie, with Gray affirming an interest.
"I would love to direct a superhero movie, Gray said. " We'll see what happens. If it's right, I'm there."
Black Panther is currently scheduled for release July 6, 2018.
