A lawsuit involving a California man selling replicas of the 1960's TV and 1989 movie Batmobile has been settled in DC's favor, with a judge ruling that DC is entitled to copyright protection of the "automotive character" of the Batmobile.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Batmobile is a distinct element of the classic TV show and movie, rather than a "useful article" - or a utilitarian rather than artistic object. This means that DC retains the copyright of the unique likeness of the Batmobile, barring its unauthorized replication or unlicensed use.
