The receipts are in for the Thursday night showings of Fantastic Four, and Variety reports that the Josh Trank-directed film earned "a respectable" $2.7 million in the first hours of its release.
The film, which currently has an aggregate 10% approval rating on RottenTomatoes, is still expected to win the weekend box office race according to the Hollywood trade, but projections have been downgraded from a $50-$60m weekend to the $40m mark. Fantastic Four's budget was estimated at $120m.
When comparing it to the last major comic-book based film, Ant-Man, Fantastic Four earned less than half that film's Thursday night showing of $6.4m, with a $130m budget.
The 2005 Fantastic Four film didn't have any Thursday night showings before it's big screen debut, but it's opening weekend grossed $56m according to BoxOfficeMojo -- which, adjusted for inflation, would be $68.43m in 2015.
