The Wrap is reporting that Benicio Del Toro is in "early stages" talks with Lucasfilm to play the central villain in the follow-up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Rian Johnson is in line to direct the untitled Episode VIII film, with shooting expected to commence in early 2016 for a May 26, 2017 release date.

If these reports are accurate, Del Toro would be the fourth major villain in this new trilogy after Star Wars: The Force Awakens Rylo Ken (Adam Driver), Captain Phasma (Gwendolyn Christie) and General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson).

Del Toro is already a part of the extended Disney family with his role as the Collector in Lucasfilm's sister company Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
