The World Video Game Hall of Fame, based at the history museum the Strong in Rochester, New York, announced Thursday its first six inductees. Culled from a list of 15 finalists voted on by fans earlier in the year, the hall of fame's inaugural class is Doom, Pac-Man, Pong, Super Mario Bros., Tetris and World of Warcraft.

"All of these games stand out because in addition to being great games, they have transcended the world of gaming to impact our wider culture," said Jon-Paul C. Dyson, Director of the International Center for the History of Electronic Games, which helps oversee the hall of fame. These six games have influenced not only people’s play but also the broader society, and we are pleased to honor them as the first members of the World Video Game Hall of Fame."
