"Peter, I am your father...."
Not quite -- but close.
In a recent chat with Vulture, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn spoke about his direction for the upcoming sequel.
"At its heart, Guardians is a story about families, and if the first film was about [Star-Lord] and his mother, this is a story about fathers. So it's exciting to go there," said Gunn.
Important to note is that Gunn said Guardians 2 is about "fathers," plural.
That's hardly surprising, given just how closely the concept of fatherhood ties to the first film. The ties go beyond the mystery of Peter Quill's father - something Newsarama has speculated about before. Thanos is father to Gamora and Nebula, a character Gunn said will have a larger role in the sequel, and Drax became the Destroyer because he lost his wife and daughter. And of course, Yondu is a father figure to Quill, twisted as he is.
But the meta-aware Gunn also knows the implications of putting that comment out there so that's just another indication that the idenity of Peter's father will almost certainly be at the center of the sequel.
Gunn also revealed that his plans have gone beyond just Guardians 2 for some time, telling Vulture "I knew for a long time what the story of the second one was gonna be, and the third one!"
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is scheduled for a May 5, 2017 release.
